The Rockwell hardness tester is a direct reading instrument which operates on the principle of differential depth measurement. La mesure de la hauteur de rebondissement a également été proposée pour mesurer la dureté du matériau. Elle a été reprise par Shore sous la forme d’une petite masse d’acier terminée par un diamant arrondi qui tombe dans un tube lisse, d’une hauteur fixe, et rebondit d’autant plus haut que la pénétration est plus faible, donc que le métal est plus dur.

Plastics and related plastic insulating materials may be measured by an indentation hardness tester. Results give an indication of the extent of cure of some thermosetting materials at room temperature, and act as a control test to indicate the punching quality of laminated plastics at the processing temperature.
