Martel conçut dès 1895, un essai de pénétration dynamique par la chute d’un pénétrateur sur la surface du matériau et la mesure de l'empreinte laissée après rebondissement. Le nombre de dureté était, par définition, égal au rapport de l'énergie du pénétrateur au volume de l'empreinte. La mesure de la hauteur de rebondissement a également été proposée pour mesurer la dureté du matériau.
