Primary disinfection is the application of a disinfectant in the drinking water treatment plant, with a primary objective to achieve the necessary microbial inactivation. The efficacy of disinfection using chlorine can be predicted based on a knowledge of the residual free chlorine concentration, temperature, pH, and contact time. This relationship is commonly referred to as the CT concept and is used by public drinking water suppliers as one tool for ensuring adequate inactivation of organisms during disinfection. CT is the product of the residual concentration of disinfectant (C), measured in mg/L at the outlet of the contact chamber, and the disinfectant contact time (T), measured in minutes. The CT values required to achieve the necessary inactivation will depend on the microorganism targeted, pH, and temperature. 1, record 26, English, - CT%20concept

2, record 28, French, - d%C3%A9p%C3%B4t%20de%20corrosion

There are four possible methods of postaerating treatment plant effluent. Two of these methods, diffused aeration and mechanical aeration, are essentially the same as those employed in biological treatment processes. The other methods, called cascade aeration and U-tube aeration, can be attractive alternatives. In cascade aeration, effluent is discharged over a series of steps or weirs in thin layers with the objective of maximizing turbulence, thereby increasing oxygen transfer. Cascade aeration is an attractive postaeration technique where sufficient head is available after secondary clarification. While U-tube aerators have not yet been employed in postaeration, they have been suggested as an attractive alternative to other postaeration methods. 2, record 35, English, - cascade%20aeration

Both the biofilm process and the activated sludge process are methods that use microorganisms to remove organic matter from sewage. In the activated sludge process, microorganisms grow in a suspended state, so the treatment system is also called a suspended growth system. In contrast, microorganisms in the biofilm process attach to the surface of certain substances, making the system an attached growth system. The biofilm process mainly includes biofilters, rotating biological contactors, and fluidized bed bioreactors. The basic principle of the biofilm process is to achieve contact between sewage and biofilm through their relative movement, enabling solid-liquid mass exchange. Organic matter undergoes biological oxidation within the biofilm, purifying the sewage. 3, record 36, English, - attached%20growth%20process

When a tree seed germinates, the first (primary) root grows down in the soil in response to gravity. Secondary roots then branch off horizontally, with subsequent branching into tertiary roots, etc. Absorption of water and mineral nutrients is the function of the very fine, non-woody roots (the feeder roots). With continued growth, each root will lose its ability for absorption. These larger woody roots then function as the transport system for water and nutrients from the new feeder roots to the stem. They are also the tree's system of anchorage and a food storage area. The resulting system thus consists of several main transport roots that extend radically and horizontally from the tree base and divide into ever smaller roots, each ending in a dense mass of fine feeder roots. 2, record 43, English, - feeder%20roots

3, record 44, French, - formule%20de%20Turc

There is an alternative between closed- and open-loop systems called standing column wells (SCWs). In a SCW, groundwater is pumped from the base of a deep well and directed to a heat exchanger. ... A SCW consists of a long borehole mostly drilled in the bedrock and filled with groundwater ... Typical installations use a PVC [polyvinyl chloride] pipe almost as long as the well within which a submersible pump is installed. In a conventional SCW, groundwater is pumped at the bottom of the well through a PVC pipe and returned below the dynamic level in the annular space of the borehole via a rejection pipe. ... Before reinjecting the groundwater into the SCW, part of the flow rate can be diverted into a separate injection well. This process is called "bleed" and improves the system performance by attracting water from the undisturbed neighbouring ground through aquifer fractures. The bleed induces heat transfer by advection ..., which improves significantly the thermal efficiency of the SCW. 2, record 53, English, - standing%20column%20well

Flash steam plants are a common type of geothermal power plant in operation ... Fluids at temperatures greater than 182 °C/360 °F, pumped from deep underground, travel under high pressures to a low-pressure tank at the earth's surface. The change in pressure causes some of the fluid to rapidly transform, or "flash," into vapor. 2, record 99, French, - bicouche%20lipidique
