Compaction mould samples. During desiccation events a soil will experience shrinkage induced stresses. These stresses are likely to slightly alter the grain orientation, residual stress and density of the soil in a similar manner to altering the compaction parameters. The associated effects of this density change have been simulated through the use of artificially made samples. The approach examined the effect of different compaction density and moulding water content upon the soil suction - water content relationship (ie the water retention characteristic). ... it is evident that the water retention characteristic is shifted upwards as compaction density decreases and moulding water content increases. This means that the water content is increased for a given value of soil suction. 3, record 43, English, - moulding%20water%20content

An appliance for loosening coal by means of high-pressure water and oil. It consists of a round stainless steel bar with small telescopic rams acting on a steel liner in a shothole. The bar is connected to a hand- or power-operated pump placed near the face. The high-pressure liquid from the pump causes the rams and liner to exert a pressure sufficient to loosen or break down the coal. It is a safe method of coal breaking without the use of explosives. It has not, however, made the progress originally anticipated. 2, record 45, English, - coal%20buster

1, record 45, French, - v%C3%A9rin%20hydraulique

... seepage pits which were used for dilute aqueous wastes have resulted in a contaminant plume of considerable volume. This lead to the fundamental decision that only solidified wastes will be considered for disposal. Experience with an early trench with a nonreinforced concrete cap, which collapsed and led to its flooding, illustrated the need for a strong, self-supporting cap as well as a permeable floor. Contaminant plumes have provided the opportunity to measure groundwater flow and radionuclide transport and to determine retardation coefficients for the different radionuclides under field conditions. 2, record 46, English, - contaminant%20plume

Minewater consists primarily of surface water or groundwater which has collected in mine workings. This may include drill water, drainage from backfill operations and infiltration of surface water or groundwater. Depending on the level of contamination, this water may be unacceptable for release to the environment without treatment. 1, record 47, English, - minewater

1, record 47, French, - eau%20de%20mine
