Le vérin à vis est constitué d’une vis de grand diamètre, en acier, à filet carré ou trapézoïdal, généralement vissée dans un écrou libre en rotation à l'extrémité d’un tube dans lequel elle pénètre. La manœuvre de l'écrou, au moyen d’un bras simple ou à cliquet, ou d’un couple conique commandé par une manivelle, provoque la sortie de la vis, et donc l'éloignement des extrémités opposées de la vis et du tube. Celles-ci prennent appui, le plus souvent par l'intermédiaire de patins, sur des surfaces dont on peut ainsi augmenter l'écartement. Le pas utilisé étant faible, le système est irréversible et ne nécessite pas de dispositif de blocage.
