La masse d’un miroir mince est très réduite, mais il «flotte comme une voile» et sa forme doit être constamment assurée par des vérins situés en-dessous et sur les côtés. [...] Cette technique est basée sur l'élasticité du verre, et sur le fait que, tant que l'on reste dans un régime linéaire, toute déformation provoquée par une force dans un sens peut être annulée par une force égale mais de sens contraire. La forme du miroir est donc malléable à volonté, tant que l'on reste dans ce régime. L'on peut donc également corriger d’éventuels défauts de polissage, l'échelle des défauts compensables dépendant directement de l'espacement entre les vérins. Cette technique permet donc de relaxer les contraintes au polissage, et donc son coût! Mais de plus, comme la forme du miroir, c. à. d. en pratique la qualité d’image obtenue, est analysée en permanence pendant les observations, nombre d’autres défauts résiduels au télescope sont corrigés en même temps(comme la défocalisation due aux variations de température, ou les déformations dues aux flexions lorsque le télescope observe loin du zenith), ce qui explique la qualité d’images exceptionnelle obtenue. 2, record 1, French, - miroir%20mince
