Toute action extérieure de faible intensité qui s’exerce sur un matériau élastique le déforme et provoque par là même une réaction du matériau égale et opposée à l'action appliquée. En tout point intérieur apparaissent alors des déformations et des contraintes locales, dont on peut affirmer, en vertu de la loi de Hooke, qu'il existe entre elles des relations de proportionnalité. Cela permet de définir des modules d’élasticité, rapports entre contraintes et déformations, caractéristiques du matériau envisagé.
