A membrane made of any material which has the properties of an elastomer, as a roofing material which can expand and contract without rupture.

In a protected membrane roof ... the air barrier on the roof is the concrete and steel roof deck. It is made continuous with the air barrier in the wall by sealing the elastomeric membrane in the wall to the edge angle of the deck.

A polymer or blend of polymers that does not require vulcanization on crosslinking during processing, yet has properties, at its service temperature, similar to those of vulcanized rubber; these properties disappear at processing temperature, so that further processing is possible, but return when the material is returned to its service temperature.

Il y a lieu de mettre à part une classe d’élastomères qui se caractérise non pas par des propriétés chimiques les destinant à des usages spéciaux, mais par le fait qu'ils peuvent être utilisés sans avoir été vulcanisés et, en conséquence, être mis en œuvre comme des plastiques : celle des élastomères thermoplastiques. Les premiers, mis sur le marché au cours des années 1960, sont des copolymères, dits copolymères-blocs, constitués en principe de trois longues séquences : une séquence centrale élastomérique(polybutadiène ou polyisoprène) d’assez grande longueur et deux séquences terminales non élastomériques(polystyrène) plus courtes.
