ELEVATION NIVEAU OCEANS [2 records]

Record 1 2023-07-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oceanography
  • Climate Change
CONT

It is estimated on the basis of observed changes since the beginning of this century, that global warming of 1.5 °C to 4.5 °C would lead to a sea-level rise of 20-140 centimeters. A sea level rise in the upper portion of this range would have major direct effects on coastal areas and estuaries.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Océanographie
  • Changements climatiques
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oceanography
  • Geophysics
DEF

At constant mass, the volume of the oceans, and thus sea level, will vary with changes in the density of sea-water. Density is inversely related to temperature.

OBS

Thus, as the oceans warm, density decreases and the oceans expand. In order to estimate oceanic expansion (past or future), changes in the interior temperature, salinity, and density of the oceans have to be considered, either empirically or by models.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Océanographie
  • Géophysique
DEF
