Selon la norme française E 27-041, les termes "chambrage" et "lamage" semblent être pris comme synonymes. Toutefois, la plupart des auteurs s’entendent pour dire qu’un lamage peut être intérieur ou extérieur, pas le chambrage. L’équivalent anglais de lamage est "spot facing". Le lamage intérieur ressemble au chambrage, sauf que l’alésage se fait sur une plus faible profondeur.
