L'Équipe Pluridisciplinaire d’Étude des Écosystèmes Côtiers(l'EPEEC), créée avec le support de l'UNESCO en 1984 par des chercheurs de différentes disciplines et de différentes structures du Sénégal, travaille sur l'ensemble des écosystèmes côtiers du Sénégal. Dans ce cadre, de nombreuses études sont menées de l'estuaire du fleuve Sénégal à l'estuaire de la Casamance et ceci dans des domaines très variés tels que les mangroves, l'hydrologie, l'hydrochimie, l'ichtyologie, la génétique des espèces végétales, la géomorphologie, et la sédimentologie.
