Pandemic influenza is a global epidemic that can happen at any time of the year. It typically occurs [three to four] times each century when a completely new strain of influenza type A virus emerges. People generally do not have any natural immunity, that is, protection against a pandemic virus. If this new virus spreads easily from person to person, it could quickly travel around the world. 3, record 1, English, - pandemic%20influenza

Epidemiological models are simplified mathematical representations of infectious disease outbreaks to understand the course of disease evolution in a population, by combining various inputs of how a disease spreads with characteristics of a population.

4, record 10, French, - diab%C3%A9sit%C3%A9

Antigenic shift occurs when major changes in genetic material have occurred. This usually occurs when cells are infected with two different strains of influenza virus at the same time. This co-infection is of concern when it involves viruses from different species (human, avian, swine, or equine). Because of the segmented RNA [ribonucleic acid] in the virus (8 genes) movement of genes from one virus to another are possible. This antigenic shift can then create a new hybrid virus which can become pathogenic to a different species. 1, record 39, English, - hybrid%20virus

3, record 39, French, - virus%20hybride

Grosse Île and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site commemorates three significant aspects of our history: first, the importance of immigration to Canada, particularly through Quebec City, from the early 19th century until World War I; Second the tragedies of Irish immigrants, especially due to the 1847 typhus epidemic; and finally Grosse Île's role from 1832 to 1937 as a quarantine station for the Port of Quebec, long the main point of arrival for immigrants coming to Canada. 1, record 56, English, - Grosse%2D%C3%8Ele%20and%20the%20Irish%20Memorial%20National%20Historic%20Site

1, record 56, French, - Lieu%20historique%20national%20de%20la%20Grosse%2D%C3%8Ele%2Det%2Dle%2DM%C3%A9morial%2Ddes%2DIrlandais

South African women express their creativity and a political message of solidarity with people suffering from HIV/AIDS through these pins.

Canine Distemper Virus in the Serengeti Lion (Panthera Leo). This paper was sparked off by Dr Thompson, who had received a video taken by Professor Ray Hilborn while in Tanzania, featuring a lion in the 'grand mal' stage of distemper. The unfortunate individual featured in the video was one of about 1,000 lions struck by an outbreak of the disease on the Serengeti plain, Africa in 1993-94. This paper is basically a collection of abstracts and references about the disease in the lion (Panthera leo), accompanied by background knowledge, and a video showing the spectacular epileptiform fits suffered by this particular lion. It should be noted that distemper fits in other species are very similar. Distemper in the lion has been mistaken for rabie Canine Distemper Virus in the Serengeti Lion (Panthera Leo) 3, record 81, English, - Canine%20Distemper%20Virus
