The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal (or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal," but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix" (peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street," now "la rue Saint-Jacques," became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada." In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002 ... 2, record 3, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

A study in Germany showed that face-to-face interviews recorded less incidents of victimization as opposed to written (postal) surveys. Reports also document rather unpredictable effects. When a switch was made from face-to-face interviewing to CATI [Computer Assisted Telephone Interview] in the international crime victim survey carried out in Spain and Northern Ireland in 2005, the results showed a substantial decrease of victimization rates in Spain and an equally substantial increase in Northern Ireland. A Bayesian Schaefer surplus production model was used owing to an insufficient time series of age-structured data and lack of information on fishery vulnerability at size or age in the fisheries. It was fitted to one fishery dependent and six fishery independent stock biomass trend indices, and a reconstructed catch history back to 1935 when the population was assumed to be near to an unfished equilibrium. Some of the catch histories data were imputed from limited data. Informative Bayesian priors were used when estimating the survey proportionality constants, based in part on interviews with experienced fishermen. 1, record 21, English, - Bayesian%20Schaefer%20surplus%20production%20model

2, record 24, French, - Tardiglaciaire

Record number: 39, Textual support number: 5 OBS
5, record 39, French, - Anglo%2DCanadien

This insect infests flour, feeds, nuts, dried fruit, breakfast cereals, biscuits, and seeds, but rarely grains such as wheat and barley. At one time it was the most serious pest in flour mills. The larvae spin silken threads, matting food particles together, and clogging machinery to such an extent that mill operations can be seriously hindered. However, modern control measures have eliminated this pest from most mills. 2, record 67, English, - mediterranean%20flour%20moth

The adult has a wing-spread of about 2.5 centimetres. The forewings are pale grey with transverse black wavy lines. The female moth lays about 300 eggs. When fully grown, the larvae are about 1.2 centimetres long, whitish or pinkish in colour, with a dark brown head. The body hairs on the back arise from dark brown spots. When mature, the larvae spin cocoons in which they pupate. The cocoon may be formed in food, machinery, or on bare surfaces. The Red River style of log building construction was one of the original methods used in Canada. The logs were left rounded with notched ends. This type of construction consisted of a basic frame of grooved, vertical, squared posts, mortised and tenoned into sills at their bases or set directly into the ground (in rare, early cases), and at their tips, mortised and tenoned into squared plates. Horizontal, squared timbers were fixed between these posts, with the tenons of the horizontal timbers fitting into the vertical groove of the posts. Roof structures of varying types were built on the wall plates. Red River Frame construction allowed both flexibility and portability. Large buildings could be erected using short logs, and buildings could be easily dismantled, moved and put up elsewhere. For these reasons, Red River Frame was the predominant type of construction used in the Canadian West during the fur trade era. The Red River style of log construction has spread across North America and is currently enjoying new popularity.

2, record 74, French, - Association%20des%20anciens%20%C3%A9l%C3%A8ves%20du%20coll%C3%A8ge%20Sainte%2DMarie

Since the beginning of our French colony, the habitants of New France created a rowdy tradition of getting together just before Lent to eat, drink and be merry. At this time, this intense period of revelry was already designated as the Carnival - a word of Italian origin meaning Mardi Gras. The custom of celebrating from the end of January until mid-February has long been popular. The first large winter Carnival in Québec City, the world's snow capital, took place in 1894. Often faced with winter's hardships, the city's population reinvented this popular tradition with a winter celebration that warmed up the hearts of all of it revellers. Interrupted by two wars, then the economic crisis of 1929, the Carnival was held sporadically until the second half of the century. In 1954, in the context of the economic development of the Old Capital, a group of business people relaunched the festivities. That year, Bonhomme was born and elected the event's representative. The first official edition of the Québec Winter Carnival took place in 1955. The Carnival snowballed into an undeniable manifestation for the entire Québec City population, and was an important vehicle for tourism and economical activity in the city. 1, record 77, English, - Qu%C3%A9bec%20Winter%20Carnival

1, record 81, French, - jour%20utilisable

There are many ideas of what HIP consists of, but at its most basic level, it means performing music with special attention to the technology and performance conventions that were present when a piece of music was composed. For many years, this approach was applied primarily to music composed before 1750, from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras. In recent years, however, the drive towards historically informed performance has made musicians reconsider how they perform Classical- and Romantic-era repertoire as well. 1, record 87, English, - historically%2Dinformed%20performance

The term means that a horse is a direct descendant in the male line, through about 30 generations, from 3 Arabian stallions imported into England. They were the Byerley Turk (in 1689), the Darley Arabian (1704) and the Godolphin Barb (1730). These were the foundation sires, and the direct line survives through a single descendant of each: Herod (1748-81), the great-great-grandson of the Byerley Turk; Eclipse (1764-89), the great-great-grandson of Darley Arabian; and Matchem (1748-81), the grandson of the Godolphin Barb. 5, record 97, English, - thoroughbred

4, record 97, French, - pur%2Dsang

Copper Age. According to the principles of the Three Age System, it should strictly mean the period when Copper was the main material for man's basic tools and weapons. It is difficult to apply in this sense as copper at its first appearance was very scarce, and experimentation with alloying seems to have begun very soon. The alternative names of Chalcolithic and Eneolithic, implying the joint use of copper and stone, are little better since stone continued in use beside bronze to a much later period. However, in many sequences, notably in Europe and Asia, there is a period between the Neolithic and Bronze Age, separated from each by breaks in the cultural development, within which copper was coming into use. For this the term is a convenient one. In Asia it saw the origins of civilization, in Europe the great folk movements of the Beaker and Corded Ware cultures, and perhaps the introduction of the Indo-European languages. 7, record 98, English, - Copper%20Age

6, record 98, French, - Chalcolithique

Broad beans are sometimes classified into subspecies according to varieties and their uses in various countries. Thus, subspecies faba var. minor is the beck, tick, or pigeon bean, greatly used for human consumption in the Arabic world, but also used for animal forage, like the horse bean (var. equina) specifically fed to horses. The broad bean proper, also known as Windsor or straight bean, is var. major. 4, record 99, English, - broad%20bean
