A Canadian woman does not lose Canadian citizenship upon marriage to an alien, and an alien woman who marries a Canadian does not, by reason of the marriage, become a Canadian citizen. In the former case, if she has acquired her husband's nationality, the married woman may divest herself of Canadian citizenship by filing with the Secretary of State of Canada a declaration of alienage and she shall thereupon cease to be a Canadian citizen. In the latter case, an alien woman must apply to the court for a certificate of citizenship.

Historically, different rationales were advanced to support and justify the "rule of spousal incompetency," some of which have been overcome in the more modern era with the legal recognition of spouses as being two separate entities. However, two rationales have survived to this day. ... The first justification for the rule is that it promotes conjugal confidences and protects marital harmony. The second is that the rule prevents "the indignity of conscripting an accused’s spouse to participate in the accused’s own prosecution." 1, record 35, English, - spousal%20incompetency%20rule

Condonation requires a mutual intention to be reconciled coupled with a reinstatement of the guilty spouse to his or her former position.
