The purpose of the Canadian Adult Achievement Test (CAAT) is to determine the functional achievement level of Canadian adults. It has been developed to assist adult basic educators to accurately assess clients working at a wide range of ability and/or literacy levels. Les premiers travaux sur la version canadienne-française ont été complétés en 1987. Dans un premier temps, on avait tenté de simplement traduire le test anglais en français sous le nom d’Épreuve canadienne de rendement pour adultes(ÉCRA). On s’est vite rendu compte qu'un test qui mesure le rendement scolaire ne se traduit pas, surtout s’il possède de nombreux sous-tests destinés à mesurer la maîtrise de la langue : on se doit de l'adapter à la nouvelle réalité.
