The "World Men's Curling Championship" (singular because only one men's team is crowned champion) is named after the sponsor of the event or the trophy given. The World Men's Curling Championship began in 1959 as a competition between the Canadian and Scottish national champions for the "Scotch Cup" (1959-1967). The event became the "Air Canada Silver Broom" or simply the "Silver Broom" (or "Air Canada Silver Broom World Curling Championship," "Air Canada World Curling Championship," or "Silver Broom World Curling Championship") from 1968 to 1985, years during which the Silver Broom Trophy was given to the winner. Different sponsors or the lack of a main sponsor account for the following names: "Hexagon World Curling Championships" from 1986 to 1988, "World Curling Championships" in 1989 and 1990, "Canada Safeway World Curling Championships" in 1991 and 1992, again the "World Curling Championships" in 1993 and 1994, and the "Ford World Curling Championships" since 1995. 1, record 3, English, - World%20Men%27s%20Curling%20Championships
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 OBS
The expression "World Men's Curling Championship" is singular when only one champion is crowned, which was the case for the curling competition from 1959 to 1978. Since 1979, the plural form "World Curling Championships" is used because the same competition determines the winner in the men's, senior men's, women's and senior women's categories; this generic designation was and will be used every time no official sponsor gives its name to the event. Nevertheless, "World Men's Curling Championship" is still appropriate to distinguish the men's event inside the "World Curling Championships.". 1, record 3, English, - World%20Men%27s%20Curling%20Championships

Silver Broom: The name given to the trophy first awarded at the "World Curling Championship" which was limited to men; the name stayed associated with the "World Men's Curling Championship" after 1979. The designation "Air Canada Silver Broom" was also used, adding the name of the airline company sponsoring the event to the name of the trophy given to the winning men's team. 1, record 3, English, - World%20Men%27s%20Curling%20Championships

1, record 3, French, - Championnats%20du%20monde%20de%20curling%20masculin
