Talbot was the inventor of the negative/positive method of photography that produced a paper print. Even though the process made possible the production of numerous prints from a paper negative, the paper print was not immediately popular. To the public the transferal of a negative into a positive print was complicated and baffling. However, Talbot took out a patent on the process in 1841.

A same-size copy made from paper impregnated with iron-salt compounds taken from a translucent original; often used for showing proofs from offset negatives prior to making offset plates. The resulting print is blue except where shielded by ink on the original.

The blueprint replaced the traditional press proof as a means of checking layout and imposition where photographic systems are used in the composition and preparatory stages of production.
