Le TRF est une adaptation française du Canadian Adult Achievement Test.

Les premiers travaux sur la version canadienne-française ont été complétés en 1987. Dans un premier temps, on avait tenté de simplement traduire le test anglais en français sous le nom d’Épreuve canadienne de rendement pour adultes(ÉCRA). On s’est vite rendu compte qu'un test qui mesure le rendement scolaire ne se traduit pas, surtout s’il possède de nombreux sous-tests destinés à mesurer la maîtrise de la langue : on se doit de l'adapter à la nouvelle réalité. C'est ainsi qu'un nouvel instrument qui rencontre cet objectif a été produit, le Test de rendement pour francophones(TRF).
