Membrane filtration is the method of choice for the analysis of fecal coliforms in water. Samples to be tested are passed through a filter of particular pore size (generally 0.45 micrometre). The microorganisms present in the water remain on the filter surface. When the filter is placed in a sterile Petri dish and saturated with an appropriate medium, growth of the desired organisms is encouraged, while that of other organisms is suppressed. ... A 100 ml volume of a water sample is drawn through a membrane filter (0.45 µm pore size) through the use of a vacuum pump. The filter is placed on a Petri dish containing M-FC agar and incubated for 24 hours at 44.5 °C (112.1 degrees F). This elevated temperature heat shocks non-fecal bacteria and suppresses their growth. 9, record 2, English, - membrane%20fecal%20coliform%20agar

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
2, record 2, French, - g%C3%A9lose%20pour%20d%C3%A9tection%20de%20coliformes%20f%C3%A9caux%20par%20filtration%20sur%20membrane

Genomic DNA is maintained with high fidelity to guarantee the integrity of genetic information. Damaged DNA must be properly repaired by sophisticated DNA repair systems to sustain cell viability and genomic stability. Homologous recombination is the major pathway for repairing DNA double strand breaks and for re-initiating stalled replication forks in E. coli and eukaryotes. In E. coli, there are several important proteins involved in homologous recombination: RecA protein is essential for pairing homologous DNA, and for promoting the strand exchange process. 2, record 23, English, - recA%20protein

1, record 23, French, - prot%C3%A9ine%20recA

Emphysematous cystitis (EC) is characterized by infection of the bladder and bladder wall with gas-forming organisms. This disease occurs most often in immunocompromised persons and is more common in women. The clinical presentations vary in severity from simple cystitis-like symptoms to full-blown sepsis. Electrophoretic separation of allelic variants of enzymes (allozymes) has been used to study the population genetics of a wide variety of species for many years. Although electrophoretically-evident variation is only a small portion of the genetic variation of a gene, many enzymes have been shown to exhibit high levels of allozymic variation. More recently, genetic variation at the molecular level [i.e., structural traits of nucleic acids such as DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)] has been used in population genetic studies. A variety of technical approaches have been used to assay molecular variation for population genetic studies. 2, record 34, English, - genetic%20variation

Methyl Red Voges Proskauer Test (MR-VP) - differentiates members of family Enterobacteriaciae based on ability to produce acid end products from fermentation of glucose. Enterobacteriaciae divided into two groups based on type of formic acid fermentation performed. 1.) Mixed acid type formic acid fermentation - results in production of ethanol and lactic, acetic, succinic, and formic acids as fermentation end products. If mixed acid fermentor, then when Methyl Red added to inoculated broth, medium turns red. If butanediol fermentor, then the color of the medium will change to yellow. Butanediol fermentor yields orange/yellow color after addition methyl red. 2.) Butanediol fermentors produce acidic fermentation products. 5, record 35, English, - mixed%20acid%20fermentation
