Dans des mutations chromosomiques, le changement se situe à un niveau élevé de l’organisation du matériel génétique et intéresse les connexions entre les segments de chromosomes. Les chromosomes remaniés peuvent avoir une structure incompatible avec les mouvements de la mitose. C’est le cas, notamment pour les chromosomes sans centromère ou possédant plus d’un seul centromère. Les cellules dans lesquelles de semblables chromosomes ont pu prendre naissance ne survivent habituellement pas à la mutation (remaniements asymétriques). Les remaniements symétriques produisent au contraire des chromosomes pourvus d’un seul centromère, qui sont alors transmis normalement par hérédité cellulaire et peuvent passer d’une génération à l’autre dans la reproduction sexuée.
