... in order to trim an elevator to hold the nose down, the elevator's trim tab will actually rise up into the slipstream. The increased pressure on top of the trim tab surface caused by raising it will then deflect the entire elevator slab down slightly, causing the tail to rise and the aircraft's nose to move down. In the case of an aircraft where deployment of high-lift devices (flaps) would significantly alter the longitudinal trim, a supplementary trim tab is arranged to simultaneously deploy with the flaps so that pitch attitude is not markedly changed.

Control and servo tabs are employed on large aircraft to assist the pilot in moving the primary control surface. When the pilot applies manual force to a surface control in the cockpit, the control or servo tab moves in a direction opposite the desired motion of the control surface. Aerodynamic forces against the tab produce movement of the control surface in the proper direction.

Servo tabs are very similar in operation and appearance to the trim tabs ... Servo tabs, sometimes referred to as flight tabs, are used primarily on the large main control surfaces. They aid in moving the control surface and holding it in the desired position. Only the servo tab moves in response to the movement of the cockpit control.

The control tab for the elevator produces a force to raise or lower the elevator in response to the operation of the control column. When the tab is caused to move down, the elevator receives an up force. The effect of the tab is assisted by the static balance weight and by the air pressure on the elevator balance panel.
