According to the company [Hughes Aircraft], the terminal homing seeker system could also be used on larger missiles. The new sensor is called a mosaic infra-red focal-plane array because of its large number of sensor elements and its location at the focal plane of the optical system where the thermal image is focused. Unlike conventional IR seekers, which mechanically scan a scene through an arrangement of oscillating or rotating mirrors, the focal plane array electronically observes the entire scene in its view all the time. Thus it is referred to as a 'staring' array, as opposed to the 'scanning' of the mechanical technique. 1, record 8, English, - mosaic%20infra%2Dred%20focal%2Dplane%20array

Confocal microscopy. Unlike "normal" microscopy, only a spot of a minimum size in the specimen is illuminated in confocal microscopy. To enable an image to be formed from this, the specimen must be scanned. The image of the spot is directed through a pinhole stop in an intermediate image plane. As a result, only light from the focal plane can reach the detector (a photomultiplier). All other (out-of-focus) planes are blocked out. This results in an "optical section". The images are stored electronically and displayed on a monitor. A series of optical sections can be recorded by moving a motor a slight distance along the z-axis each time an image has been recorded, after which the next image is then also recorded. Such a z-series permits the electronic reconstruction of the three-dimensional structure using suitable computer programs. The procedure, which is restricted to incident-light techniques, has completely revolutionized fluorescence microscopy in biology in particular. 2, record 11, English, - confocal%20microscopy

Brightfield microscopy is the most elementary form of microscope illumination techniques ... The name "brightfield" is derived from the fact that the specimen is dark and contrasted by the surrounding bright viewing field. ... In brightfield microscopy a specimen is placed on the stage of the microscope and incandescent light from the microscope’s light source is aimed at a lens beneath the specimen. ... light passes through the specimen and then is collected by an objective lens situated in a turret above the stage. ... This technique can be used to view fixed specimens or live cells. Since many organic specimens are transparent or opaque, staining is required to cause the contrast that allows them to be visible under the microscope. 2, record 15, English, - bright%2Dfield%20optical%20microscopy

3, record 47, French, - microscope%20confocal%20%C3%A0%20balayage%20laser

The application of confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) has provided a powerful non-destructive method to biofilm research. CLSM application to biofilm work ... enabled complex microbial communities to be visualised in-situ revealing their most intricate architecture and organisation without disruption caused by fixation. One major advantage of applying CLSM to biofilm study is its ability to obtain optical thin sections of fully hydrated biofilms. CLSM coupled with fluorescence methods and image analysis provides images with better resolution thus giving more information pertaining to biofilm composition. 3, record 49, English, - optical%20thin%20section
