The Bragg Crystal Spectrometer (BCS) is designed to study plasma heating and dynamics during the impulsive phase of solar flares. It consists of two bent crystal spectrometers, BCS-A and BCS-B, that observe the H-like line complex of Fe XXVI, and He-like complexes of Fe XXV, Ca XIX and S XV. Each spectrometer consists of a double detector placed behind a pair of germanium crystals that diffract the incoming X-rays into the detectors. The two structures are mounted at the front of the Yohkoh spacecraft, on either side of the central panel, with a thermal filter mounted in front of each spectrometer. The crystal dispersion axes are oriented north-south.

Solar Orbital Transfer Vehicle (SOTV)GA is a major subcontractor to Boeing on the SOTV, a space vehicle that can efficiently transport space payloads from Low Earth Orbits (LEO) to Geosynchronous Orbits (GEO) while providing kilowatts of electrical power. A solar concentrator heats a graphite receiver up to temperatures of 2400 K. Heat from the graphite receiver is used to heat thermionic converters, which produce efficient, reliable electrical power. Alternately, hydrogen can be passed through passages within the graphite receiver, expanded out a nozzle and used to produce highly efficient propulsion. The SOTV has the potential to double the delivered payload mass to GEO.

La source lumineuse qui alimente le monochromateur d’excitation est une lampe de xénon pulsée. Le réseau dispersif comporte 1440 lignes par mm. Un moteur contrôle pas-à-pas l'angle du réseau, et détermine la longueur d’onde centrale(entre 200-800 nm) qui sort du monochromateur d’excitation. À part d’une petite fraction réfléchie au photomultiplicateur de référence, l'ensemble du rayon(couvrant une gamme spectrale de SPMlt [ou] 2 à 15 nm selon la largeur des fentes) est focalisé sur l'échantillon. La réponse de ce détecteur est corrigée pour son efficacité avec une courbe de calibration interne afin de savoir l'intensité du rayon incident. Le monochromateur d’excitation permet d’obtenir le spectre d’absorption ou d’excitation de la substance étudiée.
