Physicians at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) are evaluating the use of LBS-Neurons in the world's first clinical human neuron transplant into a patient's brain. This is the first effort to treat stroke patients with an intracerebral graft of cells. These neurons are provided by Layton Science, Inc., located in Atherton, Cal. Specifically, the Pitt research team expects the LBS-neurons to improve the function of neurons damaged after a stroke. Based on previous studies with an animal model of stroke, researchers think that grafted LBS-Neurons will either enhance the function of host neurons that survive a stroke but are impaired, or replace host neurons that have been destroyed by a stroke. 1, record 27, English, - intracerebral%20graft

2, record 27, French, - greffe%20intrac%C3%A9r%C3%A9brale

Its current name, Communion and Liberation (CL), appeared for the first time in 1969. This name brings together the conviction that the Christian event, lived in communion, is the foundation of man’s authentic liberation. ... A Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas was first suggested in 1970, and again in 1981, but did not come to fruition until 1984. Planning began that year and fieldwork was undertaken from 1986-1990. This huge effort involved 1,120 people, who donated some 43,000 hours in the field. The Atlas, a 270-page book edited by Dr. Tony Erskine and published in 1992, showed where each breeding species occurred. Each species account consisted of a page of maps, a detailed descriptive account and an estimate of overall abundance. 1, record 31, English, - Atlas%20of%20Breeding%20Birds%20of%20the%20Maritime%20Provinces

Milking machines are used to milk a cow. The cows go into a milking barn, their udders are cleaned and a rubber lined suction cup is attached to the teat. The suction cup simulates the suckling action of a calf nursing. The suction cup is attached to hoses and pipes which collect the milk in a holding tank. The milk is then quickly cooled. Cows are milked twice and sometimes three times a day, usually at the same times each day.

An airborne wind turbine is a design concept for a wind turbine that is supported in the air without a tower. A tether would be used to transmit energy to the ground. These systems would have the advantage of tapping an almost constant wind and doing so without a set of slip rings or yaw mechanism, without the expense of tower construction. The main disadvantage is that kites and "helicopters" come down when there is insufficient wind. These schemes require a very long power cable and an aircraft exclusion zone. As of 2006, no commercial airborne wind turbines are in regular operation. 4, record 52, English, - airborne%20wind%20turbine

4, record 55, French, - v%C3%A9g%C3%A9tal%20en%20conteneur

Ice meter ... Objective methods of the icing measurements are based on the icing weight determination related to the unit of area (in meteorology) or to the unit of length (in power supply). The hard rime was determined with the aid of the so-called icing meter bars. They were represented by two wooden bars of 32 mm diameter and 1 m length, i.e. the surface area equals 0,1 m² per 1 bar. Bars were placed horizontally and perpendicularly to each other. First of them was oriented in north - south direction, the second east - west. The amount of water was measured and result recalculated to kg.m-². These ice meter bars made possible quite reliable evaluation of the icing without having the continual measurement. Nevertheless they are not used contemporary in the meteorological service. 3, record 58, English, - ice%20meter

Growing Unequal? brings together a range of analyses on the distribution of economic resources in OECD countries. The evidence on income distribution and poverty covers, for the first time, all 30 OECD countries in the mid-2000s, while information on trends extending back to the mid-1980s is provided for around two-thirds of the countries. The report also describes inequalities in a range of domains (such as household wealth, consumption patterns, in-kind public services) that are typically excluded from conventional discussion about the distribution of economic resources among individuals and households. Precisely how much inequality there is in a society is not determined randomly, nor is it beyond the power of governments to change, so long as they take note of the sort of up-to-date evidence included in this report. 2, record 63, English, - Growing%20Unequal%3F%20Income%20Distribution%20and%20Poverty%20in%20OECD%20Countries

2, record 63, French, - Croissance%20et%20in%C3%A9galit%C3%A9s%20%3A%20Distribution%20des%20revenus%20et%20pauvret%C3%A9%20dans%20les%20pays%20de%20l%26rsquo%3BOCDE

Fibrinolytic enzymes, particularly streptokinase, are now widely used to treat empyema thoracis. Recent in vitro evidence suggests that streptokinase has no effect on pus viscosity but that deoxyribonuclease (DNase) reduces the viscosity of pus. The Utopia Pavilion was one of the most noticed of the five theme pavilions at Portugal's World Exhibition in Lisbon. For the first time at a World or Universal Exhibition, a show was staged for over 3 million spectators. It took co-author and artistic director François Confino three years during which he worked with American, Canadian, French and Portuguese staff to see this incredible challenge through. Soaring effects and gigantic special effects were specially designed, and extremely complex mechanical systems bred movement into flexible materials and stage sets at an unusually large scale. Through close collaboration with Philippe Genty, the director, Oceans & Utopias enticed the audience on a fascinating journey through mythology, conquest and the anguish of those at sea known to everyone faced with the boundlessness of the ocean. 1, record 74, English, - Utopia%20Pavilion

1, record 74, French, - Pavillon%20de%20l%26rsquo%3BUtopie

Earth observation satellites are used to observe the earth surfaces, sea surfaces, ocean currents, clouds, etc., from space. Observation instruments are installed on satellites for remote sensing purposes. There is a relatively short development time for a long duration mission. Once launched, it has the advantage of being able to observe wide areas. Instrument operations can be easily performed from the console of a ground control station. Issues with satellite-based remote sensing are as follows: a lengthy development time from planning to actual operations, significant initial investments, risk of launch failure and inability to repair the satellite up in space. 1, record 76, English, - observation%20satellite

2, record 76, French, - satellite%20d%26rsquo%3Bobservation

February 15 is National Flag of Canada Day. It marks the day in 1965 when our red and white maple leaf flag was first raised over Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and in hundreds of communities from coast to coast. This is a perfect opportunity to celebrate our flag and what it stands for - a country and a citizenship that are the envy of the world. In our often understated ways, be it instructing students in a school classroom, taking time to listen to the stories of veterans, or volunteering at the local community centre, Canadians share their pride in our flag and in their common values. In its striking simplicity, the National Flag of Canada speaks to the exciting challenges and opportunities of our future. At the same time, it speaks to all that we have accomplished together as a people and to those moments that have served to define us. The creation of our flag in 1965 was such a moment. 1, record 85, English, - National%20Flag%20of%20Canada%20Day

4, record 86, French, - resurfa%C3%A7age%20ultra%2Dmince%20sur%20asphalte

At least 25% of the students were to be women in the first year, rising to 50% by the third year of the program. A second phase of UISP was launched in 1991, this time with the criteria that students coming to canada be from developing-country institutions already working with Canadian universities and that the field of study be related to an ongoing project of the Canadian and developing-country institutions. 1, record 87, French, - Programme%20de%20bourses%20des%20universit%C3%A9s

The type of precipitation that will fall from clouds in any given storm is largely dependent on what is called the vertical temperature profile. A vertical temperature profile is a series of temperature measurements taken at various levels of the troposphere. Meteorologists send up weather balloons twice each day to detect the air temperatures at different elevations in the troposphere. During the winter months, access to temperature data reported back from weather balloons helps meteorologists to more accurately forecast what type of precipitation is on the way. Temperature profiles, however, can change completely due to many factors in the troposphere. 4, record 90, English, - vertical%20temperature%20profile

1, record 91, French, - Mercredi%20sans%20tabac

The squall line thunderstorm is a solid or broken line of thunderstorms that form ahead of a large scale boundary such as a cold front. Although a squall line thunderstorm can produce a tornado, it is most likely to produce strong straight-line winds, downbursts, and large hail. » 6, record 93, French, - ligne%20de%20grains
