The Unified Task Force (UNITAF) was the American-led effort to bring humanitarian assistance to Somalia. This mission, although it was not UN endeavor, was authorized by Chapter VII of the UN Charter to use "all necessary means" to create a secure environment that would allow the humanitarian agencies to deliver food and general relief in Somalia. UNITAF was also tasked to promote national reconciliation and economic reconstruction of the country.
