A good understanding of the basic axis system used to describe aircraft motion is necessary to fully appreciate flight test data, since all measurements are referenced to this axis system. Aircraft translational motion is described in terms of motion in three different directions, each direction being perpendicular to the other two (orthogonal). Motion in the X direction is forward and aft velocity. The Y direction produces sideways motion to the left and right, and up and down motion is in the Z direction... There are several slightly different versions of the basic axis system just described. They differ primarily in the exact placement of the zero reference lines, but are generally similar in their directions. Gyrometers and gyroscopes. Gyrometers measure the angular velocity. Such measurement is based on the measure of Coriolis forces for a mobile in linear motion, when an additional rotation occurs... Gyroscopes are made of a solid body with high angular velocity around an axis of symmetry ... which induces a high angular stability in presence of perturbations. Such a device is used to preserve a fixed inertial orientation, while the rest of the system in in motion. It must be noted that both devices provide an information about angular velocity. The first device output is the instantaneous angular velocity, while the second device output is the integration of the angular velocity during a period of time. The axle [of the gyroscope] is contained within a pivoting frame containing two or three gimbaled rings set at right angles to the axle and to each other.
