Immune checkpoints are a normal part of the immune system. Their role is to prevent an immune response from being so strong that it destroys healthy cells in the body. Immune checkpoints engage when proteins on the surface of immune cells called T cells recognize and bind to partner proteins on other cells, such as some tumor cells. These proteins are called immune checkpoint proteins. When the checkpoint and partner proteins bind together, they send an "off" signal to the T cells. This can prevent the immune system from destroying the cancer. Immunotherapy drugs called immune checkpoint inhibitors work by blocking checkpoint proteins from binding with their partner proteins. This prevents the "off" signal from being sent, allowing the T cells to kill cancer cells. 2, record 2, English, - immune%20checkpoint%20protein

A procedure designed to evaluate the strength of the gluteus medius muscle. The examiner stands behind the patient and observes the dimples overlying the posterior superior iliac spines, then, he asks the patient to stand on one leg. If he stands erect, the gluteus medius muscle on the supported side should contract as soon as the leg leaves the ground and should elevate the pelvis on the unsupported side. This elevation indicates that the gluteus medius muscle on the supported side is functioning properly (negative Trendelenburg sign). However, if the pelvis on the unsupported side remains in position or actually descends, the gluteus medius muscle on the supported side is either weak or nonfunctioning (positive Trendelenburg sign). 3, record 23, English, - Trendelenburg%20test

Gap winds can range in width from hundreds of feet to over one hundred miles, and in unusual circumstances can be associated with strong winds exceeding 50 knots. These winds are normally quite shallow, extending hundreds of feet to a few thousand feet above the surface, with large changes of wind, or wind shear, at their upper and lateral boundaries. Gap winds are generally strongest when there is a large pressure drop across a gap, although there is one class of gap wind that does not depend on a pressure gradient across the gap. 3, record 32, English, - gap%20wind

Although physicially plausible, the venturi mechanism appears to be at odds with most real gap wind situations, where the strongest winds are generally over the exit region of the gap, not at the narrowest section or constriction. There are a number of reasons for the failure of the funnel model. First, there is no rigid lid in the real world. ... Another reason the flow tend to be strongest in the gap exit region is that there is often a synoptic or mesoscale pressure gradient across the gap. 4, record 32, English, - gap%20wind

Consent secured by force or threat of force is not acceptable, nor is consent extracted from someone who is under the influence of drugs. Mere economic duress, however, is not sufficient to obliterate an otherwise valid consent, but this conclusion is increasingly under attack. ... Young children cannot give a valid consent. Their parents must do so on their behalf. ... In Johnston v. Wellesley Hospital, a 20-year-old underwent an acne treatment by a dermatologist when the age of majority was 21 years. The court held that the consent was operative because the plaintiff was capable of fully appreciating the nature and consequences of the treatment and could, therefore, validly agree to it. 2, record 40, English, - valid%20consent

... When wheat is milled into flour, starch granules are subjected to physical damage and granules may be fractured, cracked, chopped or otherwise changed. As a result, normal flours may contain varying amounts of starch granules damaged to varying degrees in addition to intact starch granules. Hard wheat flours usually have much higher starch damage values than soft wheat flours. Starch granules in soft wheat endosperm are loosely bound in the kernel and easily released in milling; on the other hand, starch granules in hard wheat endosperm are firmly bound in a much stronger protein matrix and therefore more liable to damage when endosperm fragments are reduced during milling. 1, record 51, English, - hard%20wheat%20flour

The cockpit clearview windows are plug-type windows that rest against a flange around the perimeter of the sill. Each window can be moved through a crank-and-chain mechanism located on the bulkhead below the windowsill. To open the window, the locking mechanism is first released by the pilot. This preliminary action releases the latches on the aft edge of the window, but does not move the window. The initial turning of the hand crank pulls the aft edge of the window inboard enough to clear the sill, allowing the window to slide aft when the crank is further turned. The window can be unlocked when the aircraft is pressurized, but the outward force on the window is so great that turning the hand crank cannot open the window. 3, record 53, English, - sliding%20window

2, record 53, French, - fen%C3%AAtre%20coulissante

The prone leg extension (PLE) test is used by therapists who manually palpate the posterior muscles and observe trunk kinematics in an attempt to identify deviations from a supposed optimal. A dysfunctional firing pattern is assumed to exist when postural muscles (hamstrings and erector spinae) initiate the movement and a delay in gluteus maximus firing is evident. As well, inconsistent or altered firing patterns are assumed to be indicative of dysfunction. While dysfunctions in the trunk are hypothesized to alter the optimal firing pattern, distal dysfunction (ankle sprain) is also theorized to influence the proximal order of optimal firing patterns. An ankle sprain or lower leg injury is theorized to result in "imbalances" in the firing pattern of proximal muscles due to the dysfunction of distal segments. 4, record 54, English, - firing%20pattern

1, record 74, French, - glissement%20rapide

When the torque is applied, the sensitive axis locks at its limits of [plus or minus] 1 degree and effectively assists in positioning the azimuth gimbal. During the alignment, an azimuth tachometer supplies the required damping to prevent overshooting. The pick-off torquer, when forced against its stops, generates an error signal. 1, record 81, English, - azimuth%20tachometer

It was the deliberations of [the third Special Committee] that finally achieved a definition acceptable to the international community as a whole and it was adopted without vote by the [General Assembly] in December, 1974. 1, record 93, English, - aggression
Record number: 93, Textual support number: 2 OBS
A term fundamental to international argument, which, since the First World War, has come to replace the idea of an "offensive" act. All attempts to arrive at a definition are motivated by the desire to outlaw aggressive war, under the supposition that if there were no aggressors, but only states for "self-defense", then there would be no wars. Aggression is, therefore, the initiating act expressive of an intention to fight. 2, record 93, English, - aggression

Jig centrifuge Kelsey. 1, record 96, French, - jig%20centrifuge%20Kelsey
