The Great Bear Rainforest is a temperate rain forest on the Pacific coast of British Columbia, comprising 6.4 million hectares. It is part of the larger Pacific temperate rainforest ecoregion, which is the largest coastal temperate rainforest in the world. The Great Bear Rainforest was officially recognized by the Government of British Columbia in February 2016, when it announced an agreement to permanently protect 85% of the old-growth forested area from industrial logging. The forest was admitted to the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy in September of the same year.

DEF

One of the three main forest types in the world. Temperate forests are composed mainly of deciduous trees. The other two types are the tropical evergreen forest and the northern coniferous forest (boreal forest).

OBS

Temperate forests occur within the temperate, non-tropical zone. Temperate forests occur north of the Tropic of Cancer and south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Temperate forests usually have fairly distributed rainfall and moderate temperatures, in contrast to tropical forests which generally experience extremes in rainfall and high temperature. ... There are a number of different types of temperate forest. These include: (i) the largely coniferous boreal forests which flourish in the far north containing species such as cypress, cork oak, and stone pine, which grow on the shores and islands of the Mediterranean; and (iii) austral forests, which grow in New Zealand, Southern Australia, South Africa, and the Patagonia region of South America.

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
CONT

In North America, acid rain is a national as well as an international problem. Within the United States, pollutees are given an entitlement to be free from pollution above the limits set under the United States Clean Air Act. Canadian victims are entitled to much less. But, in both states, environmental legislation is focused on short-range air pollution since the legislation was drafted at a time when one was not aware, yet, of the detrimental effects of long-range air pollution. Therefore, the victims of long-range pollution are not adequately protected within both states.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pollution de l'air
CONT
