The act of withdrawing from a tennis tournament for personal reasons after being listed officially as an intrant but before the competition actually begins; the act or an instance of scratching a competitor from competition because of some rule infraction.

OBS

Withdrawing from a tournament can be the decision of a player or the result of a sanction against him/her taken by the tournament's officials. In both cases, the same noun is used in English.

Sanction à l'égard d’un joueur qui ne s’est pas présenté à l'heure à laquelle il a été convoqué par le juge-arbitre du tournoi; il est déclaré battu et éliminé, et son nom est rayé de l'épreuve. Son adversaire est déclaré vainqueur par «walkover»(forfait). Par extension, refus de disputer un match en ne se présentant pas à l'appel du départ.

Lorsqu’un joueur ou une joueuse se retire d’un tournoi de son propre chef, on dit qu’il y a «forfait» ou «retrait» de l’épreuve. Si la suppression du nom de l’athlète est décrétée en raison d’une entorse à une quelconque règle, il y a également «retrait», mais le geste est objectif et non subjectif. Le français étant plus précis que l’anglais, il y a lieu de choisir le nom approprié à la situation et dans la langue correcte pour le public lecteur.
