Cet hacktivisme devient de plus en plus fréquent. Les hacktivistes ont transformé au format électronique la désobéissance civile qu'ils utilisent déjà de façon traditionnelle. La plupart du temps, ces hacktivistes vont intervenir ouvertement en ligne, en expliquant clairement qui ils sont et pourquoi ils font cela, à la différence des pirates informatiques traditionnels.

Quelques types d’hacktivismes courants sont : la défiguration et la modification de sites Web, des attaques par saturation rendant les sites inaccessibles et le détournement de visiteurs, à leur insu, vers un autre site.
