Les méthodes de perturbation ont joué un rôle important en physique des réacteurs depuis les débuts des applications de l'énergie nucléaire, notamment dans le domaine des expériences critiques et des mesures. Déjà Wigner en 1945 en proposait la formulation plus élémentaire, la CPT(Classical Perturbation Theory, théorie classique des perturbations), issue directement des concepts classiques de la mécanique quantique, pour mesurer le poids en réactivité de petits échantillons de matériaux introduits dans une pile atomique.
