Grand contexte : Fabrication d’asphalte avec des matériaux recyclés à l'aide d’un four tournant. Ce «clam gate», appelé ainsi parce que sa forme rappelle celle du mollusque «clam», servirait à permettre ou à bloquer le passage des granulats vers la trémie de déchargement. Cet obturateur a la forme d’une benne preneuse(en anglais «clamshell bucket»). On peut avancer que les deux segments qui la composent rappellent la forme d’une mâchoire, d’où la proposition.
