Une argile est dite réfractaire quand elle ne s’affaisse pas à la montre n° 26 de Seger, soit environ 1 580 °C. La qualité d’une argile réfractaire est due à sa haute teneur en alumine et à sa faible teneur en oxydes métalliques, fer, calcium et surtout en alcalis.
