Afin de réunir chez un seul sujet la force et la ténacité du Bulldog et l'agilité intelligente du Terrier, des croisements furent pratiqués entre le Bulldog, le Fox-Terrier à poil lisse et le White-English-Terrier. Le chien ainsi créé pour le combat se vit complètement négligé après leur interdiction en 1835, sauf dans la province anglaise du Staffordshire.
