Le phénanthrène est présent dans l'huile d’anthracène obtenue par distillation du goudron de houille. Il est recueilli dans le filtrat de résidus d’anthracène cristallisé ou dans la fraction légère de distillation de l'anthracène brut. [...] Le phénanthrène est utilisé dans les industries des matières colorantes, explosifs, produits pharmaceutiques. Il sert de base pour la production d’autres substances chimiques(9, 10-phénanthrénequinone, acide 2, 2’-diphénique), et entre dans la composition de substances conductrices d’électricité utilisées dans les batteries et les cellules solaires.
