Detection efficiency. The intrinsic detection efficiency of any device operated in pulse mode is defined as the probability that a quantum of radiation incident on the detector will produce a recorded pulse. Especially for radiations of low intensity, a high detection efficiency is important to minimize the total time needed to record enough pulses for good statistical accuracy in the measurement. Detection efficiency is further subdivided into two types: total efficiency and peak efficiency. The total efficiency gives the probability that an incident quantum of radiation produces a pulse, regardless of size, from the detector. The peak efficiency is defined as the probability that the quantum will deposit all its initial energy in the detector. Since there are almost always ways in which the quantum may deposit only part of its energy and then escape from the detector, the total efficiency is generally larger than the peak efficiency. 1, record 8, English, - peak%20efficiency

These images come from satellites which remain above a fixed point on the Earth (ie. they are "geostationary"). The infrared picture shows the same view but looking at a part of the spectrum which our eyes do not detect. The infrared pictures allow us to measure the temperature of the cloud tops, which can be used to determine their height. The whiter clouds are colder than the greyer clouds in this image. Infrared images can be recorded 24 hours a day. Visible pictures can only be made during daylight hours. 5, record 29, English, - infrared%20image

References such as "half size", "quarter size", "same size", "size as", etc., relate to area and are therefore confusing and should not be used. Following are examples of preferred methods of marking copy: (a) Per cent -- such as 25% (b) Fraction -- such as 1/4 (c) 0.25X (d) Dimension marks, such as a line drawn parallel to an 8-inch dimension and marked "2 inches".
