The idea of the "digital divide" refers to the growing gap between the underprivileged members of society, especially the poor, rural, elderly, and handicapped portion of the population who do not have access to computers or the internet; and the wealthy, middle-class, and young [people] living in urban and suburban areas who have access. 3, record 1, English, - digital%20divide

The Digitally Divided. Recent federal government studies have found access and use of technology for certain minorities, the poor, individuals with disabilities, and those living in center cities or in rural areas lagging far behind the general population. The vast majority of Goodwill's current customers fall into this category of the "digitally divided" or "information have-nots." Increasingly, it is through technology and the Internet that customers access training, find employment, communicate with employers, get higher paying jobs, learn about support services, and are enabled to fully participate in a society that is driven more and more by technology. 1, record 2, English, - digitally%20divided

1, record 2, French, - exclus%20du%20num%C3%A9rique
