Manœuvre destinée à mettre en évidence une entorse costale : le malade est assis et placé en latéroflexion du côté opposé à la douleur, le bras du côté douloureux relevé par-dessus la tête et fléchi vers l'autre épaule; l'examinateur mobilise la côte douloureuse vers le bas et, ensuite, vers le haut avec la pulpe de ses doigts. S’ il s’agit bien d’une entorse, l'un des ces mouvements est douloureux. Les deux mouvements sont douloureux dans le cas de fracture et ils n’ engendrent aucune douleur dans les atteintes d’origine vertébrale ou névritique.

Calcitonin is produced by specialized cells in the thyroid gland and inhibits bone resorption by direct action on osteoclasts. Calcitonin treatment probably reduces the risk of new vertebral fractures, but this has not yet been proven.

In a recent study, patients treated with 75 mg of sodium fluoride daily showed impressive increases in spinal bone density but no significant reduction in the rate of new vertebral fractures. Nonvertebral fractures were more common in fluoride-treated patients than in controls.
