A collection of facts stored and retrieved as a single unit. The limitations of working memory are usually defined in terms of the number of chunks that can be handled simultaneously.

Memory consists of clusters of symbols called "chunks". A chunk is a symbol associated with a set of patterns or stimuli, chunks are hierarchized collections of still smaller chunks. In this conception, memory is a vast network of chunks. Learning and remembering occur as linkages between chunks are established and revised.

... chunks relate patterns of goal parameters to patterns of goal results. Each chunk improves the performance of the system by eliminating the need to process fully a specific instance.

The operators used by MATHPERT have been carefully chosen so as to correspond to cognitive skills, that is, to identifiable "chunks" of knowledge which can be taught and learned.

There are at least two directions in the learning process. On the one hand, experts become better at doing what they do, but on the other hand they also acquire a better understanding of their domain. They build "procedural chunks" out of single rules in order to become efficient, but at the same time they gain a more detailed sense of the intermediate causal links that single rules summarize.
