Tandem mass spectrometry ... is a process by which gas-phase ions of an analyte resulting from an initial ionization undergo separation according to their m/z [mass-to-charge ratio] values, using a first iteration of mass spectrometry. Ions of individual m/z values (precursor ions) are then subjected to collisional activation so that these precursor ions will fragment, producing product ions of different m/z values. These product ions then are separated and detected by a second iteration of mass spectrometry; thus the name tandem mass spectrometry or MS/MS. 3, record 5, English, - tandem%20mass%20spectrometry

After an initial ultrasound examination, the barbotage is usually performed when you are lying on your side. With a thin needle the whole injection area is first numbed. The calcific deposit is then approached with one or two needles and multiple punctures are performed. The procedure is highly precise and the needle is continuously watched on the ultrasound. Care is taken to minimize injury to the tendon. Sometimes water pressure is used through the needle to break and suck the calcium deposits in the area. Following the barbotage, an injection of steroid and local anesthetic is administered. 1, record 9, English, - barbotage

An ex-vessel steam explosion may occur if the primary system is breached by hot debris. Debris in the reactor outlet piping may fail the piping and fall onto the pump room floor or debris on the reactor vessel bottom may be blocked from flowing into the outlet piping if it freezes in the effluent piping nozzle muff structure. If this occurs, the debris will heat up on the reactor vessel bottom and eventually fail the bottom shield. The likely mode of failure of the bottom shield is collapse of the shield as a whole. If it collapses, the entire shield, as well as the molten debris, will fall into the pin room below the reactor vessel. The debris will then flow across the floor into the pump room. In either event, a large portion of the reactor fuel inventory will be deposited on the pump room floor. The pump room floor will be covered with water in many scenarios. A steam explosion may result when the debris enters this water. 1, record 28, English, - ex%2Dvessel%20explosion

Aid fragmentation is partly due to the current lack of concerted and co-ordinated aid allocation practices. ... Donors also decide unilaterally which countries and which multilateral organisations and global programmes to fund. … The complex and un-co-ordinated nature of aid allocation patterns not only creates gaps in terms of the varying supply of aid between developing countries (which inevitably results in some countries receiving significantly less aid than others), but also overlaps in terms of the number of donors present at country level, some of which contribute relatively small amounts. 2, record 36, English, - aid%20fragmentation

This should be associated with the Russian roulette consisting of “killing” particles whose weight is too low, with a probability that is proportional to the weight, and the “duplication” or “splitting” of particles that are too heavy. … the optimization and quantification of particle splitting [is] a variance reduction technique that decreases the variance of a run, [sigma], or its relative error, R, while increasing its computational time, [tau]. This splitting technique is described in several papers, books, and reports. Geometry splitting associated with Russian roulette is one of the most widely used variance reduction techniques in Monte Carlo codes. When used effectively (i.e. splitting a volume in the right number of layers), this method causes a net increase in the figure of merit, FOM … [In a given example of splitting technique], an incident neutron n0 of weight W is split at the boundary crossing into two identical neutrons na and nb (same energy, direction) having half the weight of n0. Splitting. 1, record 55, French, - technique%20du%20splitting

The physical breakdown of rocks by their expansion and contraction due to diurnal temperature changes is one of the most keenly debated topics in rock weathering research. Known as insolation weathering, it is the result of the physical inability of rocks to conduct heat well. This inability to conduct heat results in differential rates of expansion and contraction. Thus, the surface of the rock expands more than its interior, and this stress will eventually cause the rock to rupture. 5, record 67, English, - insolation%20weathering

[Plasmids] generally account for only a small fraction of the total host cell DNA, they often carry vital genes, such as those that confer resistance to antibiotics. Because it is so much smaller, plasmid DNA can easily be separated from the DNA of the host cell and purified. For use as cloning vectors, such purified plasmid DNA molecules are cut once with a restriction nuclease and then annealed to the DNA fragment that is to be cloned. The hybrid plasmid DNA molecules produced are then reintroduced into bacteria that have been made transiently permeable to macromolecules. Only some of the treated cells will take up a plasmid. They can be selected by the antibiotic resistance conferred on them by the plasmid since they alone will grow in the presence of antibiotic. As these bacteria divide, the plasmid also replicates to produce an enormous number of copies of the original DNA fragment. 1, record 78, English, - plasmid%20DNA

Thermally tempered glass is glass that is strengthened by heat treatment. Relatively rapid cooling of the exterior surfaces of the glass results in residual compressive stresses at the glass surfaces. The case depth for thermally tempered glass is about 20 percent of the glass thickness. Thus, thermally tempered glass is fairly resistant to scratches and other minor surface damage. The amount of temper is defined by the magnitude of the residual compressive stress at the surface of the glass. Fully tempered glass has residual surface compressive stresses that exceed 13,000 psi and are often as high as 25,000 to 30,000 psi. Fully tempered glass breaks into very small pieces when fractured. For transit applications thermally tempered glass is used to reduce the likelihood of lacerations whenever single-ply glass is required. 6, record 82, English, - thermal%20tempered%20glass

4, record 86, French, - pulv%C3%A9risation%20m%C3%A9canique
