Both the French and Spanish make much use of the anglicism "drive", albeit not in a correct fashion: In English "drive" is supposed to imply a ball hit with a lot of pace to win a point outright, regardless of the type of spin used to accomplish this task, and regardless of which side it is hit (forehand or backhand). (The terms "shot" and "stroke", being more neutral, need not imply any added spin whatsoever.) However in both French and Spanish, "drive" is also used often as a synonym for "forehand" (shot/stroke). 3, record 3, English, - forehand

2, record 3, French, - coup%20droit

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. A "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. One speaks of "classical strokes" rather than "classical shot". A "blow" on the other hand is rather a blunt, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" can often be used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. 5, record 4, English, - stroke

Both the French and Spanish make much use of the anglicism «drive», albeit not in a correct fashion: In English «drive» is supposed to imply a ball hit with a lot of pace to win a point outright, regardless of the type of spin used to accomplish this task, and regardless of which side it is hit (forehand or backhand). (The terms "shot" and "stroke", being more neutral, need not imply any added spin whatsoever.) However in both French and Spanish, «drive» is also used often as a synonym for "forehand" (shot/stroke). 1, record 9, English, - flat%20forehand%20drive
