A stroke made by hitting down on the ball with a slicing motion. Such an action imparts both backspin and side-spin to the ball, forcing it to break to a right-handed player's left side just before he is to hit the ball. 2, record 12, English, - slice

The generic term "slice" in English can mean one of 2 things: 1) the actual stroke which causes the ball to turn sideways 2) the type of ball that comes off the strings of someone making such a stroke. Moreover, many purists instructors feel that one should maintain a nuance between a slice, a chip and a chop. Nonetheless, the French equivalent for the English word "slice" ranges from "slice" (anglicisme accepté) to "chop". Note also that the French use the term "slice" to denote a particular type of serve. Compare the term "slice" with "topspin shot", "sidespin". 2, record 12, English, - slice

From 1949 to 1953, coins or sets of current coins were put aside for collectors before being bagged; only a small number of coins struck by the Royal Canadian Mint were of "special" quality with the first "Special" Sets being produced in 1953. It was in that year that the the Mint chose to label the quality internally referred to as "special" (and commercially known as "proof-like") with the official designation uncirculated. Between 1954 and 1970, "Uncirculated" six-coin Sets were produced, housed in a piece of white cardboard with cellophane which was replaced by a flat, clear polyester pouch from 1961 onward. From 1971 to 1981, this set of coins was marketed as the " Regular Set". First singly-struck, then double-struck since 1977, it was given the same brilliant, polished finish.

In addition, in January 2000 the Minister announced the [Canadian Forces' (CF)] intention to establish a combat-ready strike force ready to respond rapidly to global crises in the context of NATO or UN [United Nations] mandated missions. Central to achieving the capability will be strategic lift, an area where the CF has only limited resources. Its Hercules and Polaris aircraft are often overworked, and the CF has no dedicated sea lift assets. DND [Department of National Defence] has begun studies to determine the CF's future strategic lift requirements, one element of which will likely be an Afloat Logistics and Sealift Capability that will combine capabilities for fleet replenishment at sea, in-theatre support to joint forces ashore, and strategic lift for the army. 1, record 19, English, - strategic%20lift

1, record 36, French, - On%20ne%20frappe%20qu%27une%20fois

A facsimile printing process whereby the facsimile receiver employs a sheet of copy paper covered with a carbon sheet and is mounted on a printing cylinder. As the drum rotates, a single stylus strikes the carbon set with each incoming electrical signal from the transmitter. The force of the stylus causes a carbon mark to appear on the copy paper; by traversing the length of the cylinder, the stylus imprints the entire image of the original. 2, record 37, English, - electropercussive%20process
