Record 2 2011-12-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

A short-angled shot aimed for the sideline.

OBS

Both the French and Spanish make much use of the anglicism «drive», albeit not in a correct fashion: In English «drive» is supposed to imply a ball hit with a lot of pace to win a point outright, regardless of the type of spin used to accomplish this task. (The terms "shot" and "stroke", being more neutral, need not imply any added spin whatsoever) However in both French and Spanish, «drive» is often used as a synonym for "forehand" (shot/stroke), or like English it can refer to any hard shot, whether on the backhand or forehand side. A hook shot is a type of angle shot.

CONT

Angled drive. Tactics. A useful ploy is to hit angled cross court drives ....

PHR

Sharp angle shot.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sports de raquette
OBS

Un bon stratagème consiste à frapper croisé en angle, tel qu'illustré. Tombant soit près de la ligne de côté, soit entre la ligne de service et la ligne de fond, le coup déborde l'adversaire, laissant le court ouvert pour le prochain coup.

Record 3 2011-12-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

A shot that directs the ball diagonally from one corner of the court to the opposite corner; the ball so hit.

CONT

Cross court shots are played diagonally, i.e. right court to right court.

CONT

The cross court shot prevents the opponent from getting set on the baseline and preparing himself for an attacking approach shot.

OBS

Many purists have tried in vain to maintain the distinction between a "shot" and a "drive", the latter yielding a ball with a lot of pace while the former term being more generic, i.e., not necessarily a ball hit hard, but simply the result of the racquet making contact with the ball - a slice backhand or drop volley are both "shots" that require more touch than power. The term "drive" implies the use of power [and is a groundstroke].

PHR

Angled crosscourt shot.

PHR

To meet a crosscourt shot.
