Le traitement d’une opération de paiement par carte bancaire entraîne le plus souvent d’intervention de deux membres du groupement : d’une part, l'établissement émetteur de la carte utilisée pour le paiement, appelé aussi «banque du porteur», d’autre part, l'établissement auquel le commerçant remet la facture carte bancaire pour encaissement, qui est qualifié de «banque du commerçant». Dans ce cas, une commission dite «commission d’interchange» est versée par la «banque du commerçant» à la «banque du porteur».
