English

Subject field(s)
  • Engineering Tests and Reliability
  • Braking Systems (Motor Vehicles and Bicycles)
  • Road Transport
DEF

A device which automatically adjusts the braking force on one or more wheels of the vehicle in accordance with the static or dynamic load on those wheels.

OBS

load-sensing device: term and definition standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Fiabilité, contrôle et essais (Ingénierie)
  • Freins (Véhicules automobiles et bicyclettes)
  • Transport routier
DEF

Record 2 2016-06-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Control Systems (Motor Vehicles)
  • Driving (Road Vehicles)
DEF

Control of the lateral, longitudinal and vertical dynamics of the vehicle in order to assist driving.

OBS

vehicle dynamics control: term and definition proposed by the World Road Association.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Dispositifs de commande (Véhicules automobiles)
  • Conduite automobile
CONT

Record 3 2007-11-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wind Energy
DEF

An operation that disconnects the electrical circuits of a wind turbine in order to slow down and stop the rotor for repairs, emergency situations, routine maintenance, or when power production is not needed.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Énergie éolienne
DEF

Record 4 2007-08-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Traction (Rail)
CONT

During dynamic braking, the rotors of the electric motors are allowed to rotate and produce electricity. By generating electricity, the conversion of energy provides resistance to movement that reduces the speed of the train. The converted electrical energy is then used or expelled into the atmosphere as heat. Dynamic braking is a general term used to describe the use of an electric motor as a generator to dissipate energy.

OBS

This type of braking is more precisely described by one of two terms, regenerative and rheostatic braking ... The difference between the two types of dynamic braking is what is done with the electricity after it has been produced. In regenerative braking, the electricity is either immediately reused ... or it is stored for later use. ... Rheostatic braking occurs when the electrical energy that is produced is run through resistors and dissipated as heat energy.
