L’origine de cette numération se situe au niveau de la fabrication des sondes, qui autrefois s’obtenaient à partir de longues bandelettes de caoutchouc qui étaient refermées sur elles-mêmes en forme de cylindre. La largeur de la bandelette correspondait à la circonférence de la sonde en mm = pi (lettre grecque) + diamètre, soit un N° Charrière, nom de l’urologue français inventeur de cette numérotation. Par commodité, le nombre 3 s’est substitué à pi. N°Ch 3 = diamètre extérieur en mm. Exemple: Ch 6 = 2 mm ou Ch 4 = 1,33 mm. 1F = !Ch = 1/3 mm.
