Le VASIMR(Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket, ou «fusée à magnétoplasma à impulsions spécifiques variables») comble la lacune entre les systèmes à forte et à faible poussée. De l'hydrogène est d’abord ionisé par des ondes radio, puis guidé vers une chambre centrale où l'on fait régner un champ magnétique. Là, les particules longent les lignes de champ magnétique en tournant autour d’elles à une fréquence qui ne dépend que de leur charge électrique et de leur masse(la fréquence de Larmor). En bombardant les particules avec des ondes radio à la même fréquence, on les chauffe jusqu'à des températures de dix millions de degrés. Une tuyère magnétique transforme enfin le déplacement en spirale en déplacement axial, ce qui engendre la poussée. En réglant le chauffage et le convertisseur magnétique de sortie, le pilote commande la vitesse d’éjection. Le mécanisme est analogue à celui du levier de vitesse d’une voiture.
