Les paliers à air. Habituellement pour supporter un axe en rotation dans une machine, on utilise des roulements à billes. Les turbo-machines cycle à air exigent de tourner à très grande vitesse, de ce fait une turbo machine avec ces roulements à billes aurait une durée de vie limitée et des performances moindres. Ces paliers à air ont été conçus pour remplacer ces roulements à billes. Le principe de construction consiste à établir et à maintenir un film d’air entre l’arbre tournant et un support fixe abritant ce palier. Parmi les avantages : fiabilité plus élevée, nul besoin de lubrification, coût d’utilisation plus faible.

La calandre à satiner, ou supercalandre(...) et la calandre à friction(...) sont des dispositifs hors machine(...) qui donnent au papier un aspect satiné ou surglacé par polissage énergique entre des rouleaux de métal et des rouleaux de fibres comprimées(...) de coton ou de papier, et rectifiés au tour.(...) Le fini satiné(smooth finish) s’obtient donc par une friction de roulement(...) résultant du mouvement relatif des deux rouleaux.

OBS

Le terme "satinage" ne peut être employé pour désigner l’aspect satiné du papier car il désigne plutôt l’opération même effectuée hors machine qui permet d’obtenir un papier satiné.
