Contrairement aux attracteurs des systèmes non turbulents, un attracteur étrange est infiniment sensible aux conditions initiales. Selon B. Mandelbrot (1983:197), dans la plupart des cas, un attracteur est étrange lorsqu’il est fractal, mais la réciproque n’est pas nécessairement vraie. L’étrange présuppose des propriétés topologiques inhabituelles auxquelles peuvent s’ajouter des propriétés fractales inhabituelles.

Tom's first form of catastrophe is simply called the "fold". Consider a balloon being blown up by someone at a party. The control variable in this change is air pressure, because reducing or increasing air pressure alters the balloon's dynamics. As the air pressure in the balloon increases, the system approaches the edge of the catastrophe fold. If pushed too far it falls over the fold - into oblivion. After passing through its "fold catastrophe", the balloon burst and the system no longer exists.

Leurs noms soulignent la ressemblance avec des formes familières : le pli, la fronce, la queue d’aronde, la vague ou ombilic hyperbolique, le poil ou ombilic elliptique, le papillon et le champignon ou ombilic parabolique.
