... what makes some extratropical cyclones produce catastrophically damaging winds. ... [Keith Browning and Pete Clark] have identified a mesoscale flow which they call the Sting Jet. It originates in the cloud head of a rapidly deepening cyclone and gathers speed as it descends towards the tip of the cloud head when it begins to hook around the cyclone centre ... The Sting Jet was first identified observationally from a reanalysis of the Great Storm of October 1987 where the damaging winds were shown to be emanating from the evaporating tip of the hooked cloud head. It has since been reproduced in high-resolution runs with the mesoscale version of the Unified Model. The Sting Jet is distinct from the usual strong-wind region associated with the warm conveyor belt and main cold front. There are indications that conditional symmetric instability and evaporation both play a role in its formation but the importance of these processes remains to be quantified. 4, record 7, English, - sting%20jet
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Sting jets occur in cyclones when there is a dramatic fall in the barometric pressure. ... The sting jet is born at an altitude of three miles, within layers of ascending moist air. As the jet descends, it passes through ice crystals that cool it, increase its density and cause it to accelerate to more than 100 mph at ground level. 5, record 7, English, - sting%20jet

Record number: 25, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The supercell tornado is the most common and most violent type of tornado. These storms are formed from the rotating supercell thunderstorm, due to a clockwise change in wind direction with height. This changing of the wind direction with height causes horizontal tubes of spinning air to form. A thunderstorm updraft tilts the horizontally spinning tube of air into the vertical and stretches it out forming a small area of low pressure called a "Meso Low" which enhances the low level winds which ultimately leads to the formation of a tornado. Supercell tornadoes can exist for up to six hours, grow to diameters greater than a mile, and produce winds up to 300 mph. The visible funnel cloud forms because of the significant air pressure drop in the region of the meso low and tornado. The lower air pressure allows water vapor to condense into cloud droplets at a lower altitude, forming a cloud around the spinning funnel of air. In areas of the country, such as Colorado, where low level moisture may be lacking, a tornado may occur with no visible funnel cloud at all. 3, record 25, English, - supercell%20tornado

2, record 25, French, - tornade%20supercellulaire

norther: The term has several specific applications: 1) In the southern United States, especially in Texas (Texas norther), in the Gulf of Mexico, in the Gulf of Panama away from the coast, and in Central America (norte), the norther is a strong cold wind from between northeast and northwest. It occurs between November and April, freshening during the afternoon and decreasing at night. It is a cold air outbreak associated with the southward movement of a cold anticyclone. It is usually preceded by a warm and cloudy or rainy spell with southerly winds. The norther comes as a rushing blast and brings a sudden drop of temperature of as much as 25°F in one hour or 50°F in three hours in winter. 2) The California norther is a strong, very dry, dusty, northerly wind that blows in late spring, summer, and early fall in the valley of California or on the West Coast when pressure is high over the mountains to the north. It lasts from one to four days. The dryness is due to adiabatic warming during descent. In summer it is very hot. 3) The Portuguese norther is the beginning of the trade wind west of Portugal. 4) Norther is used for a strong north wind on the coast of Chile that blows occasionally in summer. 5) In southeast Australia, a hot dry wind from the desert is called a norther. 3, record 27, English, - norther

The squall line thunderstorm is a solid or broken line of thunderstorms that form ahead of a large scale boundary such as a cold front. Although a squall line thunderstorm can produce a tornado, it is most likely to produce strong straight-line winds, downbursts, and large hail. Winds associated with a squall line can easily exceed 100 mph and give the appearance (and sound) a tornado has struck. 4, record 35, English, - squall%20line

» 6, record 35, French, - ligne%20de%20grains

Prefrontal (warm front) fogs occur in stable continental polar (cP) air masses when precipitating warm air overrides the colder air. The rain raises the dewpoint in the cP air mass sufficiently for fog formation. Generally, the wind speeds are light, and the area most conducive to the formation of this type of fog is one between a nearby secondary low and the primary low-pressure center. The northeastern area of the United States is probably the most prevalent region for this type of fog. The dry-line is an area where the relatively dry air from the west that has passed over the Rocky Mountains and warmed by compression, butts up against and flows over very warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico. This boundary may also be referred to as the dew point front because dew point temperatures can change as much as 9°C/km. This boundary can occur as far north as the Dakotas, and as far east as the Texas-Louisiana border, but are most common on the east side of the Rockies. As surface winds converge east of the dry-line, lifting occurs, leading to thunderstorm development. 2, record 49, English, - dry%20line

Depressions can be shown to follow a life cycle - from Embryo through Maturity to Decay. The embryo depression begins as a wave on the Polar Front. The collision between air masses forces the warmer air to rise - the rotation of the earth imparts a spiral movement to the rising air. The upward movement results in the creation of a Low pressure region on the earth's surface. More air is drawn in and rises, deepening the depression. 1, record 51, English, - wave%20on%20the%20polar%20front

3, record 55, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20nuageux%20d%C3%A9pressionnaire
